Welcome to CRWildlife.com! Costa Rica with only an area of 51,000 sq.km. (slightly larger than Switzerland) has more than 830 species of birds, more than in North America north of Mexico. Situated between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south it is flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. A diversified geographical make-up, including highland and lowland forests, marshes, rivers, swamps and man made rice paddies and coffee plantations offers a variety of habitats for the birds, both resident and migratory. Although Costa Rica has many National Parks, deforestation and exploitation are taking their toll on the avian population. Costa Rica has long been a tourist destination due to its sense of adventure - live volcanoes, cloud forests, rain forests, rivers, beautiful beaches and of course many animals unknown to the visitor. Often overlooked is the fact that it is also a birder's paradise. The photographer has travelled widely in Costa Rica but admits that it may take more than his lifetime to capture with his lens only half of them. Born in the United KIngdom, Brian Nice first became interested in bird watching when at the age of eight joined the Young Naturalists' Club in Wales. Since that time he has become not only an avid bird watcher but also a photographer.
He has lived in several countries including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Canada, The United States and latterly Costa Rica where he has truly come into his own as a wildlife photographer. He spends many hours of his day watching and "shooting" birds with his Canon EOS 20D. Recently he purchased a Canon 600mm. lens which has made wildlife photography even more rewarding.
